Drive down a 75 Mile Beach on Fraser Island

Off the coast of southern Queensland just offshore from Hervey Bay, World Heritage listed Fraser Island is a crazy combination of environments in one great exotic vacation package. 

It's the world's largest sand island, 123 Kms long and 15Kms wide the island is a miracle of nature.

As one of Australia's better known exotic getaways, it's famous for its ancient rain forests, mighty sand dunes, pristine fresh water  lakes and streams and an abundance of birds and wildlife.

 It's the only place in the world where tall rainforests are found growing on sand dunes at elevations or more than 200m.
Amid the sand dunes are freshwater lakes of superb clarity surrounded by white sandy beaches. On the ocean side of the island, the sands of the famous 75 Mile Beach is flanked by strikingly coloured cliffs and desert-like sand blows. Fraser Island's dingoes are the purest of breed, as they've been isolated from other canine influences. Humpback whales can be seen from August to October, while dolphins, dugongs, turtles, sharks and huge rays also frequent the island waters.Aboriginal history claims the island as K'gari meaning paradise. European history is rich with tales of shipwrecks.

Situated 500 Kms south of the Tropic of Capricorn, Fraser Island has a hot and humid climate, cooled by sea breezes.
There are over 40 freshwater lakes and a dense rainforest together with some wonderful walking tracks to enable visitors
to appreciate the unique beauty of Fraser Island. There are no paved roads outside the resorts, but a 4WD will allow you
to experience the islands beaches, forests and lakes. In fact, Fraser Island is a 4WD heaven. The island is crisscrossed by challenging sand tracks and, of course, driving on the beach (while watching out for fishermen and washouts) is allowed.

  But beware: several 4WD vehicles are lost each year because ambitious drivers believe they can beat the tide. Several hire companies in Hervey Bay will hire
you a vehicle equipped with camping gear to enable you to set your own itinerary. You will need a permit for driving and camping on Fraser Island. Transporting 4WD vehicles from Hervey Bay City is easy aboard drive-on/drive-off barges.
